Frank van den Eeden about Waldstille

Dutch cinematographer Frank van den Eeden (May 14, 1971), resident of Antwerp is best known for his work with directors such as Fien Troch, Nanouk Leopold and Jan Verheyen. Besides many nominations he has won several awards for his work as cinematographer.  One of his later productions is ‘Waldstille’ from writer and director Martijn Maria Smits, a feature film that got its world-premiere during the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2016. The NSC talked with Frank about this film.

Joris Kerbosch (Culemborg, 1980) is best known for his work as cinematographer for directing duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil, for whom he shot the movies ‘New Kids Turbo’ (2010), ‘New Kids Nitro’ (2011) and ‘BROs BEFORE HOs’ (2013). ‘Ron Goossens, Low-Budget Stuntman,’ is their fourth feature film collaboration. Together those comedies where amongst the highest grossing films in The Netherlands and acclaimed international recognition. NSC spoke with cinematographer Joris Kerbosch about the film.

Onderwerp: The Circle of Film

Geachte Ministers, Staatssecretarissen en leden van de Tweede Kamer,

In de natuur kennen we het begrip al lang, de 'circle of life'. De voedselketen waarin iedere deelnemer, hoe klein of groot ook, zijn rol heeft in het voortbestaan van het geheel: bij, alg, mestkever, olifant, schimmel, oerbos, koraal. Het grote dient het kleine, het kleine voedt het grote - elke schakel is onmisbaar wil de keten sterk en gezond blijven.

In de cultuur, de door ons mensen gecreëerde 'mensennatuur', zou het niet anders moeten zijn. Ook daar zijn er schakels en ketens, die elkaar zouden moeten voeden en dienen. Waar de natuur in millennia van evolutie een organische 'circle of life' gecreëerd heeft, daar moeten wij in de cultuur de evolutie telkens opnieuw bedenken. Neem nu de Nederlandse filmcultuur. Er is een zogenaamde filmketen: er worden vanuit het niets ideeën en filmplannen bedacht, ze worden veelal geproduceerd met overheidsmiddelen en private financiering, het resultaat ervan wordt gedistribueerd in binnen- en soms buitenland, en vervolgens worden de films geëxploiteerd in bioscopen, op televisiezenders, dvd's, video-on-demand-platforms, via kabelmaatschappijen en telecombedrijven. We spreken daarom van een filmketen. Maar een keten is nog geen ketting. De filmketen heeft een begin, waar geld in gestopt wordt en een uiteinde waar geld verdiend wordt.

Dan heeft de natuur het beter geregeld: daar wordt voedsel mest, en de mest dient uiteindelijk als voeding voor nieuwe groei en nieuw voedsel. Zo wordt een keten een ketting, een waarachtige 'circle of life'.

De Nederlandse cultuur heeft verhalen nodig om haar identiteit, haar waardes, haar uitdagingen, haar tekortkomingen, haar morele kompas te leren kennen, te toetsen en te ijken. Die verhalen worden in onze samenleving steeds vaker via de beeldmedia geconsumeerd, via film, tv, video-on-demand, internet. Die Nederlandse verhalen zijn nodig omdat wij nu eenmaal in Nederland leven, Nederlands spreken en ook Nederlands denken.

Wil de Nederlandse filmcultuur overleven, dan zal de filmketen een filmketting moeten worden! Dan moet het einde van die keten (de filmexploitatie) aan het begin (de filmproductie) geklonken worden. Dan moeten de baten aan het einde de 'boost' voor een nieuw begin zijn.

De schakel, de missing link, die het einde van de filmketen aan het begin van die keten vastklinkt, moet door de overheid gesmeed worden. Het moet geen gouden schakel zijn, van ijzer of staal mag ook. Die laatste o zo belangrijke schakel hoeft de overheid namelijk geen extra geld te kosten, slechts de wil en overtuiging om een gezonde, zichzelf voedende filmcultuur te creëren. Als de overheid de diverse en talrijke eindexploitanten van de films en series in financieel opzicht duurzaam onderdeel laat worden van de filmproducties, door een systeem van heffingen en investeringsverplichtingen van 2 tot 5 % over de omzet, kunnen de filmmakers op hun beurt met behulp van deze financiële middelen zich beter en volwassener presenteren in de hedendaagse 'filmjungle'.

Zo kan de overheid door een formele inspanning van de filmketen een echte 'circle of film' maken. Wij hopen op uw medewerking.
