Aziz Al-Dilaimi - Talent, A Curse and a Blessing

Amsterdam, 2024-07-12 - Gerlinda Heywegen

Aziz Al-Dilaimi. His work is often flamboyant, while he himself is reserved. He speaks softly and carefully. He visualizes everything, long before even a second has been shot, and then, in the preparation, it all has to be condensed into words. And that’s not always easy. In his opinion, it’s a curse and a blessing. And that is not just a flippant remark. It is not a question of values either, ‘non-judgemental’ is who he is. It’s almost a matter of life and death, in fact, as becomes apparent in a good, long interview in Amsterdam one morning in spring.

Goert Giltay - Zen and the Art of Tightrope Walking

Amsterdam, 2023-11-29 - Gerlinda Heywegen

Goert Giltay, recently retired director of photography with a huge track record, likes to leave things up to others when his style is concerned. Every film was a new search. PODCAST - The Breakdown

Amsterdam, 2025-02-06 - Maarten Langelo

#25 The Breakdown: Maarten Slooves about 'The Business Side' & 'De Noordzee'

This time he talks with Maarten Slooves. Sitting across from me is a visual translator, a person who transforms stories into moving images. Although he has been doing this full-time since 2017 he has been involved in it for much longer. This time no Film Academy, HKU, or Willem de Kooning, but like many others in our beautiful profession he is self-taught. Interestingly enough he has a background in mechanical engineering. His passion lies in telling stories that connect with people and nature. He does this through commercials but also and perhaps especially through documentaries. Sitting across from me is Maarten Slooves! We’re going to talk about his work and very interestingly about the business side of things.

One of his favorite directors, Arjen Schotel, frequently comes up in this podcast and this episode is no exception. We’ll be discussing his best automotive commercials all of which, coincidentally, were directed by Arjen.
